| Tandil
is an Argentinean city, located in the southeast of Buenos Aires province.
It's about 360 km away from the city of Buenos Aires.
Tandil is in the middle of
a fertile valley surrounded by low hills of the Tandilia system.
Tandil's name comes from
two mapuche words: "Tan" (fallen) and "Lil" (rock), which would mean "rock
that falls", probably because of the balancing rock which existed there.
This giant rock, which balanced on top of a hill, was famous worldwide
and fell to the ground on February 29, 1912.
Tandil was founded on April
4, 1823 by Brigadier General Martín Rodriguez in his fight against
the indians who raided the area.
At the moment of its creation,
Tandil had 400 citizens (the people who had come with Martín Rodriguez),
and today has become a city of 150000. This growth was bigger in certain
years, like 1883 when the railroad arrived, the opening of the stone quarries
and the beginning of farming and cattle breeding. Later on, it was the
metallurgist industry which opened new labor opportunities in the region.
During the 70s, the opening of the University had the same effect. Nowadays,
what attracts new people is the city's standard of living.
Tandil
es una ciudad argentina ubicada en el centro-sudeste de la provincia de
Buenos Aires,aproximadamente a 360 km de la ciudad de Buenos Aires.
La
ciudad se levanta en un valle fértil rodado de sierras bajas del
sistema de Tandilia.
Su
nombre deriva de dos palabras mapuches: "Tan" (caído) y "Lil" (roca),
lo cual significaría "roca al caer" en clara alusión a la
piedra movediza existente en el lugar. Esta piedra, una gigantesca mole
de granito que oscilaba sobre un cerro y que era mundialmente famosa, se
derrumbó el 29 de febrero de 1912.
Tandil
fue fundada el 4 de abril de 1823 por el Brigadier General Martín
Rodriguez como avanzada en la lucha contra los aborígenes que asolaban
la región con sus malones.
Al
momento de su fundación, Tandil contaba con 400 habitantes (los
que habían llegado con Martín Rodriguez)y con el correr del
tiempo se ha convertido en una ciudad de 150000 habitantes. Este crecimiento
ha tenido sus picos en varios momentos de la historia como 1883 con la
llegada del ferrocarril, la explotación de las canteras y la actividad
ganadera. Posteriormente fue la industria metalúrgica la que abrió
nuevas posibilidades laborales en la región. En la década
del 70 tuvo el mismo efecto la creación de la Universidad. Hoy en
día, lo que atrae a los nuevos residentes es su calidad de vida.
